The Successful Admin ~ Tip# 1 Be an industry insider

Be an industry insider.

  • Terminology - It is vital that admins are well-versed in their particular industry's "lingo." When I began at Post-Bulletin, a widely circulated daily newspaper, words like circulation, distribution and daily miracle took on whole new meanings. My HR days were filled with terms relating to employee benefits, staffing protocols, company policies and procedures. Moving into the advertising/marketing world added to my lingo database. After morphing to the digital advertising sales and production environment, my language has taken on a decidedly technical dialect. To support your exec's be sure you study and use correct terminology. What makes you smarter, makes others more confident.
  • Trends - While terminology may stay fairly stagnant within an industry, trends do not. Think proactively about current trends and how they impact not just your work, but your communications with clients, vendors and colleagues. Trends will impact the way business is done today, while forecasting how successful business will be conducted tomorrow.
  • Technology - The tech-savvy admin will keep up with evolving tech innovations and changes but also will be mindful of the company's most frequently used technology. A working knowledge of in-house software, web-based applications, computer driven machinery that produces products all need to be at the forefront of thinking while managing and organizing work flow and productivity.
There you have it. Implement these three Ts every day and you'll be a step ahead of your peers and competition while augmenting your company's communications and ultimately, their market success.
